Quick info

  • An alternative and more adventurous way to reach the top of Puig de Galatzo, one of the premier hiking peaks of the island
  • Light scrambling with some exposure
  • Can be combined with the climb of the Agulla de Forcada (el Bispe)

General

The popular hiking peak of the southern Tramuntana has been featured in the multipitch section of this guide already, but there is reason to either come back or add another little adventure to the climb up El Bispe.

From our perspective only the east face is steep enough to be a challenge and coincidentally is also home to the El Bispe rock spire described earlier in this guide.

Logistics

See the chapter on Agulla Forada / El Bispe.

Approach

See the chapter on Agulla Forada / El Bispe.

Technical information

  • Exposed easy scrambling on rock and vegetated terrain.
  • Wayfinding can be especially difficult with low hanging clouds or fog.
  • No special gear needed. Trekking poles can be advantageous during the approach and descent.
  • East facing but exposed to the wind. There can be a cloud and fog trap in the wetter months.
  • Total ascent of roughly 350 meters.

Route finding

View from the long approach. Note the observation tower as a point of orientation.
  • From the observation tower follow the main hiking trail east towards the face.
  • After about 250 meters the trail moves right. Continue on pathless straight ahead and up. There are some crains along the way.
  • Keep your eye out for a weakness in the right part of the face and move towards it.
  • Scramble up the weakness (terrain wise this is the crux section). Easy but exposed and the mix of rock and dirt should be taken on carefully.
  • Continue up steeply with a general tendency towards the right.
  • Move in between the face and the rock towers towards the north to finally join the normal route up to the summit for the last small scramble up a narrow channel.
