Rock Climbing Mallorca: Cala Morlanda (East Coast DWS)

This article is part of a series in which I am reviewing the local climbing spots on Mallorca from my beginner / intermediate climber point of view.

The climbs
The possibility to deep water solo (climbing above water without rope protection) is one of the unique things on the island of Mallorca.

Cala Morlanda is a small area with a rocky beach flanked by seven to eight meter high cliffs. In some places the water below the cliffs is very deep and in those places climbing is not only possible but actually very nice as the rock is overhanging and littered with great holds.

There is a large depression in the left cliff (seen from the beach) that makes getting out of the water quite easy and well protected from waves. From there either travers a few meters to the right and then look for lines to the top (around French 4c / 5a) or go more or less directly (harder - maybe 6a) up. There are definitely more options here however!

Naturally the same places with deep water are used by cliff jumpers. Take care and communicate to avoid any unwanted collisions. On the other side a quick jump is a good way to get back down!

Approach
Either park somewhere in the settlement of Cala Morlanda and walk to the beach area itself or just go on foot if you stay in the holiday towns of Sa Coma or S´Illot anyways.

From the beach just swim for a few minutes over to the cliff.

The good, the bad and the ugly
A very nice area to combine a bit of swimming or snorkeling with some climbing. The climbing is very cool and safe due to the overhanging nature of the cliff and the deep water.

The only downside is the need to get along with cliff jumpers. But as they say “Sharing is caring”!
