In the shadow of Mont Ventoux

In the shadow of Mont Ventoux

Climbing and cycling in the French Provence
After several visits to the South of France in our trusty van I would like to highlight another gem of the region: Mont Ventoux and its surroundings. Situated northeast of Avignon this 1.909m mountain looms over the whole region and is well visible from any direction with its unique windswept and vegetation less summit. On and around this peak there is tons to do and explore for the activity minded traveler.

Cycling

Mont Ventoux is definitely high on the list of must-ride climbs for any road cyclists. It has featured in many Tours de France and has delivered the drama on more than one occasion. For the amateur rider even getting up the thing is a challenge with the ascent from Bedoin clocking in at almost 21km at 8.3% average gradient. On a personal note: I need to get back there to smash my previous time.

However besides the main attraction there are many smaller climbs and winding roads all around the mountain that are well worth a ride. The roads to the north are surprisingly quiet and feature some of the best views I ever had on a bike. Be prepared to climb however - there is no flat riding here!

Climbing

There are several high quality sport climbing areas in the region. The two biggest ones are the Dentelles de Montmirail and crags close to Saint-Léger de Mont Ventoux. A special highlight is definitely the Montmirail traverse: A French 5c multi pitch that crosses over the jagged ridgeline with superb views towards the Giant of the Provence.

Another very cool sport climbing area is Les Trois Rivières just north of Entrechaux that features easy access and great climbs for skill levels.

In our experience it is easy to find great spots to stay overnight in a van: Be it right under the Dentelles de Montmirail or by the (very cold!) river L´Ouveze. Beyond all the stuff to do be sure to also enjoy the quaint little towns, good food and (if the time is right) stunning lavender fields in full bloom.
